PSRD: The Importance of When

چکیده

Unraveling a planet's geologic evolution requires knowing what happened and when it happened. Two recent studies of the ages of Martian meteorites illuminate the early and late stages of Martian crust formation. One, by Munir Humayun (Florida State University) and colleagues in Australia and France studied Martian meteorite NWA 7533, an impact melt breccia composed of alkali-rich basalt similar to those at the Gusev landing site analyzed by instruments onboard the Spirit rover, and impact-modified products of such basalts. Humayun and colleagues determined the age of rock fragments in the meteorite by using secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) to date the mineral zircon. They report an age of 4.428±0.025 billion years, indicating formation of a substantial amount of the Martian crust by that time, a mere 100 million years after the planet formed.

Modified Progressive Type-II Censoring Procedure in Life-Testing under the Weibull Model

In this paper we introduce a new scheme of censoring and study it under the Weibull distribution. This scheme is a mixture of progressive Type II censoring and self relocating design which was first introduced by Srivastava [8]. We show the superiority of this censoring scheme (PSRD) relative to the classical schemes with respect to “asymptotic variance”. Comparisons are also made with respect ...

PSRD: Crystallizing the Lunar Magma Ocean

central tenet of lunar science is that the Moon was surrounded by a huge ocean of magma when it formed. Originally thought to be a few hundred kilometers deep, lunar scientists now think that the entire Moon was initially molten. Numerous geochemical models have been constructed for the crystallization of the magma ocean. All the calculations use computer programs based on experimental data, bu...

PSRD: Organic Globules from the Cold Far Reaches

Keiko Nakamura-Messenger and colleagues at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, studied minute globules of organic material in the Taglish Lake carbonaceous chondrite. This meteorite was collected soon after it fell, so is fresh and likely to be uncontaminated with terrestrial organic compounds. Using microanalytical techniques the NASA team found that the globules had hydrogen and ...
